Coinciding with the shifting real estate market and economic downturn, the retail space at 50 East Northwest Highway sat vacant for months after a previous tenant ended their lease.

Through the creative thinking of the our Team & Board, the Frisbie Senior Center decided to host a “Garage Sale” fundraiser to purchase the space.

In early 2009, over $5,000 was raised from the event, and the Frisbie Senior Center successfully completed its land acquisition.  But what to do with the excess goods?

After additional donations were accepted, the Frisbie Senior Center reopened the “Garage Sale” store as the Once & Again Resale Shop.

Starting out, the store was open a few days a month, then a couple of days per week, leading up to its current schedule of six days per week. Not only was the vacant space filled, but all of the store proceeds are reinvested locally to support programs and activities offered through the Frisbie Senior Center.

Thrift (also referred to as secondhand or resale) shops are certainly one of the most successful “recycling” methods of our time.  Not only are donations tax deductible, but donated goods benefit other members of the community, typically Des Plaines patrons.

For extremely large donations, please call in advance (847.768.7055) so we can make special accommodations. All proceeds generated by the Once & Again Resale Shop benefit the Frisbie Senior Center and the extensive programs and services offered to its members and the community-at-large.
